Summer Health Tips AND Qigong & Tai Chi class starting this month!

Happy Summer!

According to Chinese medicine, summer is connected to the fire element, the heart, small intestine and the emotion joy. It is a time to spend time with people we love and embrace the yang, action filled energy that abounds. Below I am listing some tips for staying healthy during the summer. By following these Chinese Medicine principles you can harmonize with summer’s energy, maintain your health throughout the season, and move into the next season with more ease!

  • Embrace the season's active, outward energy. Engage in outdoor activities that bring joy and vitality. If you feel fatigued from all the yang energy allow yourself to sit and observe nature and let the stillness of your body replenish you.

  • Balance Heat and Hydration
Combat excess heat by consuming cooling foods like cucumbers and watermelon. Drink plenty of water and herbal teas such as chrysanthemum.

  • Support Your Heart
Nourish the Heart with foods like tomatoes and berries. Practice relaxation techniques to maintain emotional and physical balance. Spend time following your heart's messages and desires. Laugh easily, especially at yourself.

  • Opt for Light, Seasonal Foods
Enjoy light, easily digestible meals with seasonal fruits and vegetables. Avoid overly spicy or rich foods.

  • Prevent Summer Imbalances
Use cooling herbs like cilantro, and ensure proper rest to counteract heat-related issues like irritability and digestive problems.

  • Manage Emotions
Summer’s energy can heighten emotions, so incorporate stress-relief practices like yoga, tai chi, or nature walks to keep balanced. Labeling your emotions can help provide space between you and your reactions allowing for a more skillful response.

  • Moderate Your Indulgences
While summer is a time for socializing, balance is key. Avoid overindulgence and listen to your body’s needs for rest and recovery. If you do overindulge, enjoy it, be gentle with yourself the next day, and add in some green tea.

Now is the time to be mindful of strengthening your immune system in preparation for fall.  Following these simple Chinese Medicine principles as we move into fall will allow for healthy immune systems and lungs.
